An Interactive Graph Layout Constraint Framework

Abstract

Several solutions exist to constrain nodes or edges for creating desired graph layouts or arrangements via automatic layout. However, these constraints, which are often handled in separate views, tend to produce conflicts if not handled carefully. We present an interactive layout framework that visualizes existing constraints and available new constraints interactively in the diagram. Adding constraints via diagram interaction allows reevaluation of existing constraints based on the intended movement of the constrained node and prevents conflicts between constraints. The framework can easily be utilized by new layout algorithms and is independent of the actual layout implementation.
