Abstract

In this paper we present and compare two regularized higher-order photometric stereo approaches for the reconstruction of varying albedos and surface normals of non-Lambertian materials. We evaluate the two different higher-order polynomial methods, which we additionally regularize with Tikhonov’s method. The reconstruction of surface properties is essential for a vast amount of industrial applications, such as the identification of surface defects, the analysis of security features or the detection of forged documents. For the reconstruction of Lambertian objects, lower order models can be used to achieve an accurate representation, while higher-order models allow the description of non-Lambertian behaviors accurately. Qualitative and quantitative results on a ground truth dataset as well as on real-world data show that the use of a regularized higher-order polynomial model can significantly improve the surface normal and albedo reconstructions.
