Philosophical Foundations of Learning: Insights from Wittgenstein and Heidegger on AI Cognition

Abstract

This paper attempts to develop a perspective on how Wittgenstein and Heidegger can be fruitfully synthesized to bear upon the questions involved in designing AI. Currently, when AI technologies are basically good at track following and note making, they lose traits toward social and existential intelligibility. The loss comes in comprehending meanings and intentions. Indeed, the “language games” concept of Wittgenstein tends to emphasize that meaning is negotiated through dynamisms induced by social practices on the one hand, though Heidegger argues on the other that understanding comes from engagement emanating from the body in the world. The context with elements of learning and adaptation that AI has today is seen as limitations, and hence the paper unearths philosophy-based methods that can be used to improve the performance of AI through real social and environmental embedding.
