Abstract

Transportation has become the pioneer of Chinese modernization and plays an important role in achieving common prosperity. From the perspective of urban-rural income disparity, we empirically investigate the effect of transport infrastructure on common prosperity, the mechanism and nonlinear characteristics based on panel data of 30 provinces in China from 2001 to 2020. The results show that transport infrastructure can significantly reduce the urban-rural income disparity and promote common prosperity by the mechanism of labor mobility. With the continuous improvement of the transportation network, the effect of transport infrastructure in narrowing urban-rural income disparity and promoting common prosperity shows a marginal incremental trend. Our findings provide rewarding policy implications for the practice that transportation continues to empower the common prosperity in the new era.
