Abstract

Digital humanities (DH) combines research objectives in the humanities with digital data acquisition, processing, and presentation methods. This work describes the development of a visualization approach in the field of DH to analyze the coexistence of institutionalized religious communities in Middle Eastern cities during the medieval period. Our approach aims to support the entire process of data acquisition, storage, analysis, and publication with interactive visualization. The support of the whole process enables a consistent concept for the representation of confidence, the collection of provenance information, and the implicit storage of gained knowledge. Our concept empowers scholars to trace obtained results up to the verifiability of details in the corresponding sources, facilitates collaborative analyses, and allows for the serialization of results and use in corresponding publications. We also reflect on the benefits, limitations, and lessons learned when applying interactive visualization to the concrete tasks and with respect to data collection and publication of findings.
