Abstract

The purpose of this position paper is to raise awareness about the negative impacts of age-related hearing loss and the importance of providing good hearing healthcare. We also provide an overview of state-of-the-art hearing aids - the standard rehabilitative technology for hearing loss – along with some thoughts about the future of hearing healthcare. Provision of hearing intervention is critical because untreated age-related hearing loss is associated with numerous negative impacts on the health and well-being, such as increased odds of falling, social isolation and cognitive decline. We suggest that, hearing technologies that combine intelligent computer systems with user centred approaches to hearing healthcare provision will ensure that hearing aids result in improved quality of life for those with hearing loss.
