Abstract

The double burden of malnutrition is defined as the coexistence of overweight or obesity and under nutrition which has been identified in several developing countries. This was a secondary data analysis and aims to investigate differences among households with and without maternal child double burden of malnutrition (MCDB) in terms of the dietary pattern derived from factor analysis (FA) of 14 food groups. The data analyzed comes from part of The Indonesian Family Life Survey 2007. Data on food habits was collected using a food frequency questionnaire. The results of FA showed 4 types of dietary pattern, namely: "plant based protein", "nutrient dense food", "lean-meat" and "fish". The results showed that there is the significant difference in two of the four dietary patterns between the households with and without MCDB (p-value=0.0233). The household with MCDB has less consumption of nutrient dense food and lean meat, while consumption of plant-based protein and fish showed no significant difference. The low consumption of nutrient dense food and lean meat indicate that food consumed in MCDB households was high in energy, but low in micronutrients that will affect child growth.
