PlGF as Predictor of Preeclampsia Complication

Abstract

Abstract Background: Research finds PlGF as single marker or combined with sFlt-1can be used as predictor of preeclampsia or growth restriction during second trimester of pregnancy. No trials have studied PlGF to predict complications during expectant management of early onset preeclampsia. This study will evaluate correlation between serum PIGF and preeclampsia complication on expectant management of early onset preeclampsia. Method: This is an analytic observational study on 19 pre-term preeclampsia (preeclampsia onset less than 34 weeks) patients who underwent expectant management. Control group was normal pregnant women, with equal gestational age to sample group. Both groups were followed until delivery. PIGF was measured using PlGF Triage Test Alere San Diego. Maternal complication is defined as preeclampsia complication (HELLP, lung edema, eclampsia, acute renal failure, DIC and liver rupture) diagnosed during expectant management or delivery process. Result: There was significant difference of PIGF level between preeclampsia and normal pregnant groups. Median level of PlGF of preeclampsia group was 12pg/mL (<12–248) and control group was 718pg/mL (161–3000pg/mL). There were four patients (out of 19) who developed maternal complications, but there was no correlation between PlGF serum and preeclampsia complication on expectant management of preeclampsia (p=.53 on Fischer exact test). There were no significant differences of PIGF level between complication group and without complication group. Conclusion: PIGF as single marker cannot be used to predict preeclampsia complications.
