Abstract

Impacts of technological development is the entry of the printed media industry into sunset business phase. This condition has made many printed media industries out of business. A survey conducted by Nielsen in early 2017 shows that Kedaulatan Rakyat (KR) is able to become the third widely consumed local printed media in Indonesia. This article then aims to describe how KR uses its strategy to face media industry business competition. By using phenomenology method to Management of PT Kedaulatan Rakyat and Chief Editor of Kedaulatan Rakyat Daily and using Philip M. Napoli’s Media and Public Interest Model as its theoretical basis, it is found that KR performs local community newspaper strategy so that it can survive in the competition of media industry today. The manifestation of this strategy emerges in supporting the development of the Special Region of Yogyakarta both materially and non-materially. In addition, financially, KR is supported by a diversified non-media business that contributes greatly to maintaining the sustainability of its business. The implications of the results from this study are discussed further in the context of printed media industry strategy management to face technological changes.
