Abstract

This study illustrated the development and emergence of the local media industry in Indonesia. The research focused mainly on demonstrating the local television media industry movement by media conglomerates. The changes in decentralization in Indonesia since the Post-New Order Era have brought many implications and changes for local communities. This was also the case in the mass media industry. The local-national discourse debates were attached to ownership issues and media operations in the country. Through the implementation of the secondary data review and interview methods, the study mapped local media ownership in Indonesia by two major local media groups, i.e. the Jawa Pos Group and the Bali Pos Group, to estimate local media conglomeration practices (2010–2015). This study argument claimed that decentralization discourse in Indonesia had become an increasingly open opportunity for local media corporations to develop their local media business control.
