Abstract

Movies consist of goals why they were made. Beside as an entertainment, movies were used as soft power to spread idea, belief, and ideology .This study examined stereotypes of East and West in the movie of “The Great Wall”. Basically, stereotype builds main definition in culture development. In addition, the work of art is able to prove how stereotype works to give the meaning of the art about what is happening in the reality. The Great Wall was directed by a well-known Chinese director, Zang. Zhang made this story by showing the domination of Chinese cultures, however this movie placed Matt Damon, the Westerner as the main character who was represented as a European who came to China to steal the black powder. By choosing Matt Damon as main character, was this only a marketing strategy to increase the rating of the movie to get more profit or were there any other reasons why the director chose Matt Damon? This movie agreed and performed about the concept of West as superior. However, the East, represented by China also tried to perform their superiority. By using critical discourse analysis, this research tried to investigate not only from the text, but also from the social cognition and social context. Result supported that this movie was made to spread the ideology of China to show the equality between West and East
