Abstract

The purpose of this study is to identify the role of event in building the image about Indonesia’s cultural identity abroad. Cultural identity can be defined as a unique characteristic that distinguishes a country from other countries. It is a potential resource to communicate universally, as well as an important aspect which could enhance the relations among the countries. That’s why Indonesian Embassy in Paris organized a cultural event namely Couleurs d’Indonésie 2016 or Colorful Indonesia Festival 2016 to introduce and to build the image about Indonesia’s cultural identity. Indonesia is a big country with varied cultural diversity, consisting of thousands of islands, tribes and languages. It is a unique characteristic but somewhat it is difficult to represent these richness in just one event. Consequently, this is a challenge for the cultural agents of Indonesia abroad such as the Indonesian Embassy to make it happen. Especially during these days, Indonesia is not well known in France. Thus, the Indonesian Embassy in Paris considered that organize an event would be more effective than any other medias of communication. Especially, Paris is located in the center of Europe and one of the biggest multicultural city in the world. Our aim for this study is also to provide an evaluation that can be useful for future Indonesia cultural events abroad. This research uses qualitative approaches. We collected data through observations, literary studies and indepth interviews. The result as well as final conclusion is Couleurs d’Indonésie 2016 has the important role as Indonesian government public relations, as a media of cultural diplomacy, and also has an important role in conceptualizing and representing the culture to build image of Indonesia’s cultural identity.
