Abstract

Scientific skills are amongst the crucial skills emphasized in the 2013 national curriculum. One aspect of scientific skill is the ability to plan and conduct experiments. Based on a preliminary observation conducted in a class of one high school in Lembang, it was found that the student ability to plan and conduct experiment is relatively low. Hence, this study aims to enhance student's ability in planning and conducting experiments by utilizing plants around the school as sources of learning. This study was a classroom action research, conducted in XI MIPA class of a high school in Lembang. The study consisted of two cycles, and content material for each cycle was varied. The first cycle focused on genes diversity, whereas the second cycle was dedicated to species diversity. The research instruments were: observation sheet of student performance completed with a rubric, cognitive test, and questionnaire. The results showed that there were improvements in student’s ability in planning and conducting experiments from cycle 1 to cycle 2. The ability to plan experiment increased from 26.3% to 97.4%, while the ability to conduct experiment increased from 50% to 89.5%. There was also an increase in the number of students who categorized well on the concept mastery from 15.7% to 84.2%. From the result of questionnaire, it was found that students possessed better understanding in plant biodiversity when using plants around the school as learning sources.
