Abstract

A finger sucking habit which continues into adulthood may cause malocclusions, one of which is an anterior open bite. Purpose: This case report highlights the management of patient treatment using orthodontic appliances to correct an anterior open bite while eliminating the adult’s finger sucking habit. Case: A 25-year-old female patient visited orthodontic clinic with the chief complaint of lack of contact between the upper and lower anterior teeth and the most important anamnestic information was the presence of a prolonged finger sucking habit. Clinical examination showed an overbite of 4.2 mm, anterior proclination, diastemas and the median shifting to the left. Case Management: A fixed palatal crib soldered on molar bands was placed on the upper first molar, while an MBT Bracket slot 0.022 was placed on the upper anterior teeth 0.5 more gingival than normal. After the leveling and aligning stage, a 0.016 x 0.022 SS rectangular wire closing T loop was used for anterior retraction. The treatment was completed with an application of a torque, and an elastic triangle. Discussion: The appropriate fixed orthodontic appliances with palatal cribs were not only able to correct the anterior open bite but it could also eliminate the patient’s finger sucking habit.
