Abstract

Indonesia’s diplomatic relationship with the West can be traced back as far as the 15th century. At that time, hard power diplomacy was proven ineffective against the Dutch colonialist. Knowing this situation, the ruler of Kasunanan Surakarta Hadiningrat, Pakubuwono IX, developed another approach. It was the Srimpi Sangupati dance, which was effective against the Dutch and helped Kraton Kasunanan survived the colonialism. It also strengthened the morality and movement for the Javanese in resisting Dutch colonialism. This essay explains what Srimpi Sangupati did as a diplomatic tool used by Pakubuwono IX. Srimpi Sangupati case shows that soft-power cultural diplomacy and social movement has already being done by Indonesian even before the country was born. This research suggests that soft diplomacy will become an alternative tool in the field of diplomacy today.
