Abstract

Gedong hamlet in Mount Merbabu slope has ecotourism potential that has yet to be fully exploited. This research examines how social media can be used as a strategic tool to exploit this ecotourism potential, for instance in promoting the natural beauty of the mountains in Gedong known as the Gedong Pass (G-Pass). Tour activities in G-Pass were uploaded to social media from February to August 2017, and the contents were analyzed to find the tourist’ perception on G-Pass as an ecotourism attraction. The results show that promotion via the Internet attracted mainly youths to visit G-Pass who visited the place for recreations, for selfies in unique location, which were then shared on their social media account. The implication included information technology literacy, sustainable tourism consciousness, and also additional income for the local community. The negative effect exerted is potentially disturbed natural preservation due to ecotourism activity intensity and social harmony due to economic benefit felt unevenly by all communities.
