Abstract

The purpose of this study is to see how the news coverage of the 212 mass movement by news portal viva.co.id were received by students. This study is important since teenagers are the largest group of internet users in Indonesia. They also can be the communicator by re-sharing the news they had read. Stuart Hall’s Cultural Studies Theory, specifically on message reception is employed in this study based on in-depth interviews with 10 teenage informants. Selection of informants was by purposive sampling with the main criteria being that they are active internet users and active in Islamic organizations on campus. The findings indicate that informants tend to be categorized in the negotiating position of the news reader, and will re-share the news using their social media accounts.
