Abstract: Imaging the eye retina is critical to diagnose various pathologies, particularly Diabetic Retinopathy, which is the leading cause of avoidable blindness in the world. Accessing the retina can be achieved through ophthalmoscopes with small field-of-view or Optical Coherence Tomography and fundus cameras, which are larger and expensive. The image acquisition through tabletop fundus cameras is the preferred method for retinopathy screening. However, these devices tend to be cumbersome and require expertise for operation, limiting its broad application. In this paper, a compact optical system was designed for a handheld and smartphone-based fundus camera prototype called EyeFundusScope, with the main goal of low-cost and high coverage screening. The key features for the compact optical system are the mobile and non-mydriatic acquisition of fundus images by a smartphone camera, with high field-of-view. The simplicity of the optical system was accomplished by a three lens system s etup, simulated using ray tracing software. The results reveal a system with only a few aberrations in the periphery but with a good resolution at the center of 41 field-of-view. Besides the optical system, a mechanical prototype was designed with the purpose of being 3D printed and easily portable. (More)
