Abstract: Introduction:Urinary Incontinence (UI) affects up to 30% of community dwelling older adults and more than 50% of nursing home residents. It is about 2-3 times more common in women than in men until 80 years old, after which UI rates are similar. Previous study showed that parity also isthe risk factor for the development of UI. Objectives: To describe UI prevalence and its relation between parity and UI of elderly women at private nursing homes in Surabaya. Material and Methods: Subjects were elderly women recruited consecutively from one private nursing home Surabaya in this cross-sectional study; those who suffered from dementia withunstable vital signswere excluded. The 3 Incontinence Questions (3IQ) wereused for subjective data and rectal toucher examination as an objective one. Childbirth history was asked about as one of the UI risk factors. Informed consent wasobtainedbefore the study. Results: 30 completed questionnaires were obtained. The overall UI prevalence was 55% consis ting of functional UI (3.7%) due to knee osteoarthritis, mixed UI (7.4%); stress UI (18.51%) and urge UI (25.95%).The least was 44% who didn’t complain of UI, but 22% had a mismatch between subjective and objective examination (MMT was <3), whichmay be due to social embarrassment. Pearson analysis showed no relation between parity and UI prevalence (r=0.176; P=0.05), but a significant relation between age and UI prevalence (r=0.047; P=0.05).Conclusion: The high prevalence of UI in nursing homes in Surabaya is nearly similar to the previous study that showed UI prevalence had become more common with increasing age especially in women. No relation was found between parity and UI prevalence among elderly women. (More)
