Abstract: Neglected elbow dislocation (NED) often results in contracture and functional impairment. It limits the function of the upper extremities which can affect the quality of life. The focus of surgical and rehabilitation management is to achieve and maintain stable anatomic reduction that allows early active motions. Careful rehabilitation management for NED in elderly patients with coronary heart disease is needed. Objective: To propose rehabilitation management for an elderly woman with coronary heart disease and elbow joint instability due to NED caused by a traffic accident. Case: A 66-year-old female with coronary heart disease diagnosed with neglected right elbow dislocation was selected in this study. She had posterolateral right elbow dislocation, limited elbow motions, and strength. She had difficulties in daily activities. The ECG result showed that she had stable angina. Moreover, she routinely takes medicine and controls from a cardiologist. The rehabilitation goal in this st udy was to prevent joint contracture, restore joint stability, and restore elbow function. Discussion: Optimal rehabilitation of the elbow after injury or surgery requires careful timing and progression of therapy. The rehabilitation programs include pain and edema control, range of motion exercises, strengthening exercises, occupational therapy, endurance exercises, and an elbow-hinged splint. Conclusions: Comprehensive rehabilitation programs for elderly persons with coronary heart disease and NED after surgery can improve elbow motion and strength, joint stability, and hand function to help with daily activities, and maintain cardiovascular endurance so it can increase the quality of life.
