Abstract: Enterprises use Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) and Service-Oriented Design (SoD) as a means to achieve better business-IT alignment and a more flexible IT environment. Definitions of both notions are often not clear or even contradict. This paper instantiates the Generic System Development Process (GSDP) for service-orientation and provides a common terminology for comparing the scope of different methodologies. To demonstrate its use we compare several existing methodologies. Methodologies that focus on (nearly) the whole service-oriented development process are Papazoglou’s and van den Heuvel’s service-oriented design methodology, SOMA and SOAF. More specialized methodologies are the goal-driven approach, BCI3D, and Business Elements Analysis.
