Abstract: The issue of patient safety has become a global issue since the Institute of Medicine (IOM) in the United States published a paper titled “to Err Is Human: Building A Safer Health System.” However, the issue of patient safety at the community health centers (hereinafter-termed puskesmas) is not as dynamic as that of the hospital level. The aspect of clinical quality and patient safety in puskesmas is only recently implemented in Indonesia. This study aimed to identify the implementation of patient safety by the nurses in the inpatient rooms of two Puskesmas in Aceh. This comparative study employed the cross-sectional design. All nurses at Puskesmas Pidie and Pidie Jaya, 65 nurses and 40 nurses respectively, involved in the study. Using the independent t-test, the results show that there were no differences in the implementation of patient safety (p = 0.322), patient identification (p=0.238), correct drug administration (p=0.889), absence of errors in medical and nursing procedure s (p=0.421), and infection prevention (p=0.388) in the two puskesmas. Only in the prevention of patients from being injured was a difference observed (p=0.048). It is necessary that the nurses improve their knowledge, skill, and motivation toward patient safety to increase medical services at the Puskesmas. (More)
