Abstract: After the Cold War, the study of international relations has shown a significant change in its emphasis on the state as the main actor and stressing on material aspects such as military and economic power. This study focuses on the ideational non-material, including national identity in international relations. Samuel Huntington has warned that the clash of civilizations is not caused by inter-state conflicts but because of the struggle of national identities, which leads to questioning of the state existence and the collapsing of states such as Soviet Union and Yugoslavia. Trough descriptive qualitative method, this paper discusses the reasons why ideational orientation is important in the study of international relations in the post-Cold War and what are the essential factors that shape the national identity.
