Abstract: Being elderly is the final stage in human life. The phase of growing old is characterized by the reduction of body functions and leads the elderly to becoming susceptible to diseases. One of the diseases that is often experienced by the elderly is constipation. Constipation can potentially cause colon cancer which can also lead to death. Constipation can be caused by various factors, such as lack of physical activity and poor intake of dietary fiber. The purpose of this study is to determine the factors that cause constipation in elderly and how the health plan program should be aware of these factors. The subjects in this study were 68 elderly people whose dietary fiber intakes had been assessed using the 24 hours’ food recall method. Their constipation rate was measured by a Constipation Scoring System questionnaire. The results showed that there was a strong and positive correlation between dietary fiber intake and physical activity with constipation in the elderly in Madiun City. These results can be arranged to be an input to the Community-Based Health Efforts for the Elderly, also known as the Posyandu Lansia plan program to raise awareness on constipation problem in the elderly.
