Abstract: Solvents contain a volatile organic compound used as a thinner in the glue of shoemakers’ workshops which may endanger workers’ health. This study aims to analyze the correlation between the use of glue and its related health problems among shoemakers in Surabaya. This observational descriptive research was carried out on the population of 71 shoemakers in Surabaya. The independent variable in this study was the type of glue used by the shoemakers (White glue/WG, Yellow Glue/YG and latex glue/LG), while the dependent variable was the health problems. Coefficient contingency was applied to identify the strength correlation among variables (C). Most of the respondents experience 2 to 5 health problems related to the glue they used (62%). The most prominent complaint was tingling (81%). There were correlations between the use of WG glue and dyspnea complaints (C=0.4); between the use of mixture of glue (WG, YG and LG) with tingling and skin irritation (C=0.269); the use of mixture of glue (WG and YG) with complaints of liver disorders (C=0.243); and between the use of LG together with WG and or YG and tingling (C=0.258). It can be concluded that those health problems among shoemakers were correlated with the glue usage. (More)
