Abstract: Objective: To measure the effect of Tai Chi exercise on cardiorespiratory endurance by measuring VO2max and respiratory function capacity showed by measurement of Peak Expiratory Flow Rate (PEFR) in elderly woman in nursing homes. Design: Quasi experimental with non-randomized control group pre-test and post-test. Setting: Two different nursing homes. Methods: Elderly women at nursing homes aged >60 years old (N=28) were assigned to a Tai Chi group (N=14 persons; mean age 65.9+7.2 years old) and a control group (N=14 persons; mean age 75.6+4.3 years old) for 5 times a week for 8 weeks. Subjects in the Tai Chi group undertook supervised Tai Chi training consisting of 5 minutes of warm up, 30 minutes of main exercise, and 5 minutes of cool down. The subjects in the control group were instructed to do their daily activities as usual without any Tai Chi exercise. The main outcome measurements were cardiorespiratory endurance that was measured with VO2max using Six Minute Walk Test/6MWT and PEFR that was measured using a mini wright peak-flow meter. Result: There was a significant increase in walking distance (p<0.0001), VO2max (p<0.0001) and PEFR (p<0.0001) after 8 weeks of Tai Chi exercise compared with the control group. Conclusions: Tai Chi exercise increases cardiorespiratory endurance in elderly women (More)
