Abstract: An incentive spirometer is a tool that is usually used for cardiorespiratory exercise. It is designed to mimic natural sighing or yawning by encouraging the patient to take long, slow, and deep breaths. The objective of this study was to show the usefulness of incentive spirometers as a prognostic factor post cardiac surgery. We examined 3 patients who were going to have cardiac surgery. These 3 patients were using incentive spirometry before and after the cardiac surgery. We evaluated the length of stay, where a shorter length of stay may show faster improvement of the patient’s conditions. The first patient was a female, 32 years old with atrial septal defect secundum; she underwent atrial septal defect closure surgery; she could raise 2 balls only before surgery and had 16 days of stay after cardiac surgery. The second patient was a male 48 years old, with mitral valve disorder; he underwent mitral valve replacement surgery; he could raise 3 balls before surgery and had 9 days of stay. The third patient was a 65-year-old female with left atrial myxoma, mitral valve disorder, and tricuspid valve disorder; she underwent mitral valve replacement, tricuspid valve repair, and myxoma excision surgery. She could raise 1 ball before surgery and had 18 days of stay. These 3 cases show that the more balls that could be raised before the surgery, the shorter the length of stay that could be achieved. Incentive spirometers might become a prognostic factor for post cardiac surgery. (More)
