Abstract: Inadequate intake in patients with pulmonary tuberculosis is influenced by many factors and can adversely affect treatment outcomes. Nutritional management is recommended to improve patient’s intake; and therefore, it can improve nutritional status and accelerate recovery of patients as well. This was a case report of a 31-year old man with pulmonary TB, severe protein energy malnutrition, hypoalbuminemia and imbalance electrolyte who was consulted for nutritional management. Nutrition intervention was given slowly and increased gradually until total energy requirement achieved. Virgin coconut oil was one of energy sources. Vitamin A, B complex, C, D, zinc, curcuma, egg white, snakehead fish extract were given as food-supplement. Patient was discharged after being hospitalized for 3 weeks with improvement of BMI from 13.3 kg/m2 to 14 kg/m2, acid fast baciili from 2+ to 1+, normal electrolyte and albumin. Tuberculosis causes malnutrition and malnutrition weakens the immune system so n utritional improvement is a must in the management of tuberculosis. Focus of nutritional management in these patients is by suppressing inflammation along with tuberculosis drugs. Nutritional management was recommended to improve nutritional status and accelerate recovery of pulmonary tuberculosis patients. (More)
