Foreword: Huge amounts of information in digital format are currently available; for example, the world-wide-web is an immense source of text, images, video, and sound. Structuring/understanding this vast amount of multimedia information is a difficult task. Accessibility issues arise in this context, with personal identification techniques playing a key role in designing human-machine interfaces for security reasons and accessing restrictedaccess systems. Pattern recognition (PR) and machine learning (ML) techniques provide formal frameworks in which this class of problems can be adequately addressed. On the other hand, exploratory analysis (data mining) and content-based retrieval of multimedia data serve both as important practical application domains for PR and ML techniques, and as a source of challenging research problems. The aim of this workshop is to bring together researchers, practitioners and potential users with interests in the multidisciplinary topics listed above. This volume contains all the papers presented at PRIS 2006, held in Paphos, Cyprus, May 23 – 24, 2006. This workshop is a satellite event of the ICEIS 2006 conference, continuing the line started by the first edition in Setúbal, Portugal, in 1999. A total of 17 papers were selected from 42 submitted papers. Of these, 14 were selected for oral presentation and 3 were selected for a poster session. In addition, three distinguished researchers were invited to give keynote addresses: Michalis Vazirgiannis, from Athens University of Economics and Business, Greece; Elzbieta Pekalska, from the University of Manchester, UK, and Delft University of Technology, The Netherlands; and Anil K. Jain, from Michigan State University, USA, presenting a keynote lecture in a common session with the conference ICEIS 2006. We would like to express our sincere gratitude to all the members of the program committee for doing an excellent job in reviewing the papers which has resulted in ensuring a high quality proceedings. Special thanks go to the invited speakers for their valuable contributions. We would also like to acknowledge all the authors for submitting papers, and all the participants who contributed to the success of this meeting. The workshop was organized under the umbrella of the ICEIS 2006 – International Conference on Enterprise Information Systems. Our thanks go to ICEIS 2006 for providing us the local organization support and facilities. Special thanks are due to Vitor Pedrosa and Bruno Encarnação for secretarial support and the edition of these proceedings. (More)
