Foreword: This volume contains the proceedings of the 4th International Conference on Computer-Human Interaction Research and Applications (CHIRA 2020), which was exceptionally held as a web-based event this year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, from November 5-6, 2020. CHIRA is sponsored by the Institute for Systems and Technologies of Information, Control and Communication (INSTICC), and is held in cooperation with the ACM Special Interest Group on Management Information Systems (ACM SIGMIS), the Association for Information Systems - Human-Computer Interaction (AIS SIGHCI), and the European Society for Socially Embedded Technologies (EUSSET). The purpose of CHIRA is to bring together professionals, academics and students who are interested in the advancement of research and practical applications of human-technology & human-computer interaction. Different aspects of Computer-Human Interaction were covered in four parallel tracks: Human Factors and Information Systems, Interactive Devices, Interaction Design, and Adaptive and Intelligent Systems. In addition to paper presentations, CHIRA’s program included four keynote talks delivered by internationally distinguished speakers: Giancarlo Fortino (University of Calabria, Italy) Wearable Computing Systems based on Body Sensor Networks: State-of-the-art and Future Research Challenges; Ann Blandford (UCLIC, University College London, United Kingdom) Information, Understanding and Trust: Explorations in Computation and Interaction; Yvonne Rogers (UCLIC, University College London, United Kingdom) The New Zeitgeist: Human-AI; and Anind K. Dey (University of Washington, United States) Using Everyday Routines for Understanding Health Behaviors. The conference also included two Special Sessions, namely the Special Session on Reliable Estimation of Passenger Emotional State in Autonomous Vehicles (SuaaVE) chaired by Juan-Manuel Belda-Lois and Nicolas Palomares; and the Special Session on User Decision Support and Human Interaction in Digital Retail (WUDESHI-DR), chaired by Zohreh Pourzolfaghar, Douglas Cirqueira and Gültekin Cakir. Both special sessions contributed to the community with oral presentations (full and short papers), which have also been included in the proceedings book. CHIRA received 44 paper submissions from 22 countries, of which 34% were accepted as full papers. The high quality of the papers received imposed difficult choices during the review process. To evaluate each submission, a double-blind paper review was performed by the Program Committee, whose members are highly qualified independent researchers in the CHIRA topic areas. All presented papers will be submitted for indexation by Scopus, Google Scholar, DBLP Computer Science Bibliography, Semantic Scholar, EI (Elsevier Engineering Village Index), and Thomson Reuters Conference Proceedings Citation Index (CPCI/ISI). A short list of papers presented at the conference will be selected for publication of extended and revised versions in the CCIS (Communications in Computer and Information Science) Series book by Springer. All papers presented at this conference will be available at the SCITEPRESS Digital Library. We express our thanks to all participants. First to all the authors, whose quality work is the essence of this conference; secondly to all members of the Program Committee and auxiliary reviewers, who helped us with their expertise and valuable time. We also deeply thank the invited speakers for excellent contributions in sharing their knowledge and vision. Finally, we gratefully acknowledge the professional support of the INSTICC team for all organizational processes, especially given the need to introduce online streaming, forum management, direct messaging facilitation and other web-based activities in order to make it possible for CHIRA 2020 authors to present their work and share ideas with colleagues in spite of the logistic difficulties caused by the current pandemic situation. We wish you all an inspiring conference. We hope to meet you again next year for the 5th edition of CHIRA, details of which will soon be available at http://www.chira.scitevents.org/. (More)
