Foreword: Huge amounts of information in digital format are currently available; for example, the world-wide-web is an immense source of text, audio, images and video. Organizing and understanding this multimodal information is a difficult problem, which requires advanced techniques from pattern recognition and related fields such as machine learning, computer vision and human language technology. An increasingly important aspect of this problem is human-computer interaction, especially multimodal interactive systems in which humans and machines seamlessly cooperate to efficiently solve a given task. On the other hand, accessibility issues also arise in this problem, with personal identification techniques playing a key role in human-computer interfaces for security and restricted-access systems. The aim of this workshop is to bring together researchers, practitioners and potential users with interests in the multidisciplinary topics cited above. This volume contains all the papers presented at PRIS 2008, held in Barcelona, Spain, June 12 - 13, 2008. PRIS is, since 1999, a satellite event of the ICEIS conference, continuing the tradition started by the first workshop in Setúbal, Portugal. A total of 24 papers were selected from 39 submitted papers; 17 papers were presented orally and 7 papers were presented at a poster session. In addition, two distinguished researchers were invited to give keynote lectures: Prof. Dr. Horst Bunke, from IAM - Bern (Switzerland), who spoke on "Recent Developments in Graph Classification and Clustering Using Graph Embedding Kernels" and Prof. Dr.-Ing. Hermann Ney, from RWTH – Aachen Germany, with a talk entitled "Statistical Pattern Recognition and Machine Translation from 1988 to 1998: What Has Happened?". We would like to express our sincere gratitude to all members of the program committee for doing an excellent job in reviewing the papers which has resulted in ensuring a high quality proceedings. Special thanks go to the invited speakers for their valuable contributions. We would also like to acknowledge all the authors for submitting papers, and all the participants who contributed to the success of this meeting. The workshop was organized under the umbrella of the ICEIS 2008 – the International Conference on Enterprise Information Systems. Our thanks go to ICEIS 2008 and its main sponsor INSTICC (Institute for Systems and Technologies of Information, Control and Communication) for providing us local organization support and facilities. Special thanks are due to Vitor Pedrosa for secretarial support and the publication of these proceedings. We also would like to thank the Spanish "Ministerio de Educación y Ciencia" for partially supporting PRIS 2008 under the MIPRCV "Consolider Ingenio 2010" research program (CSD2007-00018) and the iDoc research project (TIN2006-15694).
