Foreword: This volume contains the proceedings of the 5th International Conference on Computer-Human Interaction Research and Applications (CHIRA 2021), which was exceptionally held as a web-based event this year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, from October 28-29, 2021. CHIRA is sponsored by the Institute for Systems and Technologies of Information, Control and Communication (INSTICC), and is held in cooperation with the Association for Information Systems - Human-Computer Interaction (AIS SIGHCI), and the European Society for Socially Embedded Technologies (EUSSET). The purpose of CHIRA is to bring together professionals, academics and students who are interested in the advancement of research and practical applications of human-technology & human-computer interaction. Different aspects of Computer-Human Interaction were covered in four parallel tracks: Human Factors and Information Systems, Interactive Devices, Interaction Design, and Adaptive and Intelligent Systems. In addition to paper presentations, CHIRA’s program included three keynote talks delivered by internationally distinguished speakers: Albrecht Schmidt (Ludwig-Maximilians Universutät München (LMU), Germany), Interactive Human Centered Artificial Intelligence: A Definition and Research Challenges; Pattie Maes (MIT, United States), Cognitive Augmentation; and Anton Nijholt (University of Twente, Netherlands), Alignment in Augmented Reality: Beyond Sight. The conference also included two Special Sessions, namely the Special Session on Research Trends to Enhance the Acceptance of Automated Vehicles - SUaaVE 2021, chaired by Nicolas Palomares and Juan-Manuel Belda-Lois; and the Special Session on Interaction with Humanoid Robots - Humanoid 2021, chaired by Peter Forbrig. Both special sessions contributed to the community with oral presentations (full and short papers), which have also been included in the proceedings book. CHIRA received 35 paper submissions from 18 countries, of which 23% were accepted as full papers. The high quality of the papers received imposed difficult choices during the review process. To evaluate each submission, a double-blind paper review was performed by the Program Committee, whose members are highly qualified independent researchers in the CHIRA topic areas. All presented papers will be submitted for indexation by Scopus, Google Scholar, DBLP Computer Science Bibliography, Semantic Scholar, EI (Elsevier Engineering Village Index), and Web of Science/Conference Proceedings Citation Index (Clarivate). A short list of papers presented at the conference will be selected for publication of extended and revised versions in the CCIS (Communications in Computer and Information Science) Series book by Springer. Another short list of papers will be invited for a post-conference special issue of the Springer Nature Computer Science Journal. All papers presented at this conference will be available at the SCITEPRESS Digital Library. We express our thanks to all participants. First to all the authors, whose quality work is the essence of this conference; secondly to all members of the Program Committee and auxiliary reviewers, who helped us with their expertise and valuable time. We also deeply thank the invited speakers for excellent contributions in sharing their knowledge and vision. Finally, we gratefully acknowledge the professional support of the INSTICC team for all organizational processes, especially given the need to introduce online streaming, forum management, direct messaging facilitation and other web-based activities in order to make it possible for CHIRA 2021 authors to present their work and share ideas with colleagues in spite of the logistic difficulties caused by the current pandemic situation. We wish you all an inspiring conference. We hope to meet you again next year for the 6th edition of CHIRA, details of which will soon be available at http://www.chira.scitevents.org/. (More)
