Foreword: This book contains the proceedings of the 5th International Congress on Neurotechnology, Electronics and Informatics (NEUROTECHNIX 2017). This year the congress is held in cooperation with Neurotech Network, International Clinical Neurophysiology Society (ICNS) and Sociedade Portuguesa de Neurologia (SPN). NEUROTECHNIX 2017 is sponsored by the Institute for Systems and Technologies of Information, Control and Communication (INSTICC) and co-organized by our local hosts, the Universidade da Madeira and The Madeira Interactive Technologies Institute (Madeira-ITI). Neurotechnology has seen in the past years tremendous progress. Each year we focus on a topic area: last year the focus was on the understanding and restoring the function of the human hand (“Hand’s on Neurotechnix”), this year the focus moves on to consider the Neurotechnology of thought and cognitive processes – we want Thinking Neurotechnology. We have organized a special Symposium on Cognitive Neural Engineering “Understanding, Decoding and Interfacing with Cognitive Level Processes in the Brain through Neurotechnology” or in short “CogNeuroEng”, chaired by Aldo Faisal and Moritz Grosse-Wentrup. A major aspect of our program is that it reflects the breadth and depth of Neurotechnology, this is supported by our set of four plenary keynote lectures, given by internationally distinguished researchers in the fields of Neurotechnology: Sergi Bermudez i Badia (Madeira Interactive Technologies Institute/Universidade da Madeira, Portugal), Mónica Cameirão (Universidade da Madeira, Portugal), Moritz Grosse-Wentrup (Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems, Germany) and Eugenio Guglielmelli (Università Campus Bio-Medico, Italy). In addition, the Technical Program includes oral presentations (full papers, short papers and extended abstracts), organized around four simultaneous tracks: Neural Rehabilitation and Neuroprosthetics, Neuroinformatics and Neurocomputing, Neuromodulation and Neural Engineering and Neuroimaging and Neurosensing. All complete papers (full and short) are published in this book of proceedings to add onto our lasting Neurotechix legacy. NEUROTECHNIX received numerous submissions across the spectrum of Neurotechnology of which 16% were presented as full papers. To evaluate each submission, a double-blind paper review was performed by our established Program Committee. A short list of the presented papers will be selected by audience reviews and the conference chairs boards so that revised and extended versions of these papers will be published as a book in the Biosystems & Biorobotics (BioSysRob) Series of Springer. All papers and extended abstracts presented at this congress will be available at the SCITEPRESS Digital Library. Congresses are also meeting places where collaboration projects can emerge from social contacts amongst the participants. Therefore, in order to promote the development of research and professional networks the Congress includes in its social program a Social Event & Banquet in the evening of October 31. We would like to express our thanks to all participants. First of all to the authors, whose quality work is the essence of this congress; secondly to all members of the Program Committee and auxiliary reviewers, who helped us with their expertise and valuable time. We would also like to deeply thank the invited speakers for their excellent contribution in sharing their knowledge and vision. We wish you all an inspiring congress and an unforgettable stay in the lovely region of Funchal, Madeira, Portugal. We hope to meet you again next year for NEUROTECHNIX 2018, details of which will soon be available at http://www.neurotechnix.org. (More)
