Foreword: This book contains the proceedings of the 3rd International Conference on Sensor Networks (SENSORNETS 2014), which was organized by the Institute for Systems and Technologies of Information, Control and Communication (INSTICC). The Conference Program includes oral presentations (full papers and short papers) and posters, organized in seven simultaneous tracks: “Sensor Networks Software and Architectures”, “Wireless Information Networks”, “Hardware”, “Data Manipulation”, “Signal Processing”, “Obstacles” and “Applications and Uses”. Furthermore, we are proud to announce that the plenary program also includes five plenary keynote lectures, given by internationally distinguished researchers, namely – Stephen Fairclough (Liverpool John Moores University, United Kingdom), Pasquale Daponte (University of Sannio, Italy), Sandro Carrara (EPFL, Switzerland), Chenyang Lu (Washington University in St. Louis, United States) and Utz Roeding (Lancaster University, United Kingdom). SENSORNETS 2014 received 74 paper submissions from 31 countries, of every continent. To evaluate each submission, a double blind paper review was performed by the Program Committee, whose members are highly qualified researchers in SENSORNETS topic areas. Based on the classifications provided, 24 papers were selected for oral presentation (10 full papers and 14 short papers) and 22 papers were selected for poster presentation. The full paper acceptance ratio of SENSORNETS 2014 was 14%, and the total oral acceptance ratio (including full papers and short papers) was 32%. These strict acceptance ratios show the intention to preserve a high quality forum which we expect to develop further next year. A post-conference Special Issue of the Information Fusion Journal is planned for publication of revised and extended versions of selected high quality papers presented during SENSORNETS 2014. All papers presented at this conference will be available at the SCITEPRESS Digital Library. In order to promote the excellence of young researchers and to encourage them in their future contributions, the "Best Student Paper Award" was conferred to the author(s) of the best full paper presented at SENSORNETS 2014, selected by the Program/Conference Chairs based on the best combined marks of paper reviewing as assessed by the Program Committee, and based on the paper presentation quality as assessed by the Session Chairs. The SENSORNETS conference series intends to be a meeting place where information exchange occurs and where collaboration projects emerge from social contacts amongst the participants. Therefore, in order to promote the development of research and professional networks the SENSORNETS 2014 included in its social program a Conference Social Event & Banquet in the evening of January 8th. We would like to express our thanks to all participants, and particularly to the authors, whose quality work provided the essence of this conference. Secondly we owe gratitude to all members of the Program Committee and auxiliary reviewers, who helped us with their expertise and valuable time. We would also like to deeply thank the invited speakers for their excellent contribution in sharing their knowledge and vision. Finally, a word of appreciation for the hard work of the secretariat: organizing a sizable and reputable conference is a task that can only be achieved by the collaborative effort of a dedicated and highly capable team. We wish you all an inspiring conference and an unforgettable stay in the lovely city of Lisbon, Portugal. We hope to meet you again next year for SENSORNETS 2015, details of which will soon be available at http://www.sensornets.org. (More)
