Foreword: Huge amount of information in digital format is currently available; for example, the world-wide-web is an immense source of text, images, video, and sound. Structuring and understanding this vast amount of multimedia information is a difficult but a much needed task. Accessibility issues arise in this context, with personal identification techniques playing a key role in designing human-machine interfaces for security reasons and entering restricted-access systems. Pattern recognition (PR) and machine learning (ML) techniques provide formal frameworks in which this class of problems can be adequately addressed. On the other hand, exploratory analysis (data mining) and content-based retrieval of multimedia data serve both as important practical application domains for PR and ML techniques and as a source of challenging research problems. The aim of this workshop is to bring together researchers, practitioners and potential users with interests in the multidisciplinary topics listed above. This volume contains all the papers presented at PRIS 2007, held in Funchal, Portugal, June 12 - 13, 2007. PRIS is, since 1999, a satellite event of the ICEIS conference, continuing the tradition started by the first workshop in Setúbal, Portugal. A total of 23 papers were selected and presented from 51 submitted papers; 16 papers were presented orally and 7 papers were presented at a poster session. In addition, two distinguished researchers were invited to give keynote addresses: Joachim Buhmann, from ETHZ - Switzerland, who spoke on "Complex Statistical Models for Object Recognition and Mass Spectrometry" and Mário Figueiredo, from IST/IT - Portugal, with a talk entitled: "Semi-Supervised and Active Learning". We would like to express our sincere gratitude to all the members of the program committee for doing an excellent job in reviewing the papers which has resulted in ensuring a high quality proceedings. Special thanks go to the invited speakers for their valuable contributions. We would also like to acknowledge all the authors for submitting papers, and all the participants who contributed to the success of this meeting. The workshop was organized under the umbrella of the ICEIS 2007 – the International Conference on Enterprise Information Systems. Our thanks go to ICEIS 2007 and its main sponsor INSTICC (Institute for Systems and Technologies of Information, Control and Communication) for providing us the local organization support and facilities. Special thanks are due to Vitor Pedrosa for secretarial support and the publication of these proceedings. (More)
