Foreword: This volume contains proceedings of the Sixth International Conference on Fuzzy Computation Theory and Applications (FCTA 2014), which was sponsored by the Institute for Systems and Technologies of Information, Control and Communication (INSTICC) and co-organized by Sapienza University of Rome. This conference was held in Rome, Italy. IJCCI was technically co-sponsored by IEEE Computational Intelligence Society, co-sponsored by IFAC – International Federation of Automatic Control and held in cooperation with the ACM SIGART- ACM Special Interest Group on Artificial Intelligence, AAAI - Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence, APNNA - Asia Pacific Neural Network Assembly, EUSFLAT- European Society for Fuzzy Logic and Technology, International Neural Network Society and the International Fuzzy Systems Association. In FCTA, the study, analysis, design, modeling and implementation of fuzzy systems, in a broad range of fields, is the main concern. Fuzzy computation is a field that encompasses the theory and application of fuzzy sets and fuzzy logic to the solution of information processing, systems analysis and synthesis problems. Bolstered by information technology developments, the extraordinary growth of fuzzy computation in recent years has led to major applications in fields ranging from medical diagnosis and automated learning to image understanding, decision and systems control. FCTA 2014 received 51 paper submissions from 28 countries in all continents, of which 16% were presented as full papers. The high quality of the papers received imposed difficult choices in the review process. To evaluate each submission, a double blind paper evaluation method was used: each paper was reviewed by at least two experts from the independent international Program Committee, in a double-blind review process, and most papers had three reviews or more. Moreover, the conferences also featured a number of keynote lectures delivered by internationally well known experts, namely: Marie-Jeanne Lesot ( Université Pierre et Marie Curie - LIP6, France), Danil Prokhorov ( Toyota Tech Center, United States), Bernard De Baets ( Ghent University, Belgium) and Cesare Alippi, Politecnico di Milano, Italy. The meeting was also complemented with a Doctoral Consortium on Computational Intelligence chaired by Prof. Antonello Rizzi. The best contributions to the conference and the best student submissions were distinguished with awards based on the best combined marks of paper reviewing, as assessed by the Program Committee, and the quality of the presentation, as assessed by session chairs at the conference venue. All presented papers will be submitted for indexation by Thomson Reuters Conference Proceedings Citation Index (ISI), INSPEC, DBLP, EI (Elsevier Index) and Scopus, as well as being made available at the SCITEPRESS Digital Library. Additionally, a post-conference special issue of the Springer's SCI (Studies in Computational Intelligence) Series book is planned for publication of an extended version of a restricted number of original high quality papers presented during the IJCCI 2014. Building an interesting and successful program for the conference required the dedicated effort of many people. We would like to express our thanks, first of all, to all authors including those whose papers were not included in the program. We would also like to express our gratitude to all members of the Program Committee and auxiliary reviewers, who helped us with their expertise and valuable time. Furthermore, we thank the invited speakers for their invaluable contribution and for taking the time to synthesize and prepare their talks. Moreover, we gratefully acknowledge the professional support of the INSTICC team for all organizational processes. (More)
