Foreword: Excellencies, Distinguished Speakers, All Participants, Ladies and Gentlemen, It is my great pleasure, as the Rector and on behalf of the State University of Malang, to welcome all of you, from abroad and within Indonesia, to participate in the 2nd International Conference on Learning Innovation (ICLI) 2018. Ladies and Gentlemen, The issues of innovation in education and learning are now of critical importance to the responses of the era of Industrial Revolution 4.0 and it’s Disruptive Technology. As all of us witness, this era brings a number of challenges and becomes one of primary focuses in higher education worldwide, especially in preparing well-prepared generations. Most of higher education institutions make their choices and approaches of their resources to strongly respond this global-impacted issues. Here in the Universitas Negeri Malang or UM, the issues have been addressed institutionally, starting last year, by initiating the center of excellence (CoE) for Learning Innovation. With the support from the Ministry of Research, Technology, and Higher Education, this center will hopefully be effective by the end of this year. Our university believes that all endeavors in answering the Industrial Revolution 4.0 challenges cannot be successful without being innovative in educating people. Through this center, we are going to make a great shift from the paradigm of professional development to capability development for students. This shift will also bring the involvement of trans-discipline approaches where the disruptive technology issues will be addressed as well. With the support from the Islamic Development Bank through loan grant of 4-in-1 project for National Competitiveness, this center is developed by conducting research, scientific publication, and curriculum development. By the end of this year, this center will be one of the front-liners in UM’s techno park. Ladies and Gentlemen, For addressing innovation issues and education simultaneously, there are many challenges to long-term preparedness, including curricular, technological, financial, and organizational approaches. Yet, it is a cross-national issue for all of us involved in the creation, dissemination, and management of knowledge to make sure the information we deal with can be available for future generations. It is also a development issue for the society to guarantee that the accumulated knowledge will be utilizable in the future to promote further progress. To accelerate the utilization of knowledge, UM has made relevant formulations in its Mission and Strategic Plan 2015-2019. It is stated that UM is going to foster science and technology through research, to enhance community’s prosperity, and to obtain both national and international recognition. For upcoming year, UM has some prioritized policy as follows: strengthening research roadmaps, developing the center of excellences, strengthening research consortia, enhancing the number of scientific publication, as well as intellectual property rights. The conference like 2nd ICLI is surely becoming one of the milestones for this policy. Ladies and Gentlemen, This conference, in our point of view, is indeed could provide a guideline and platform for future collective efforts in responding disruptive technology worldwide. The presence of members of the Indonesian Consortium for Learning Innovation Research, officials of the IDB-funded 4in1 Project for National Competitiveness, representatives of four universities –UM, UNTIRTA, UNEJ, and UNMUL, and experts of education and learning, is truly a strong statement in addressing the above-mentioned issues. No matter how much we can do by ourselves on the national level, whether it be research or development, it is never enough. In a spirit of true cooperation and collaboration, we in this region of the world, proud of nurturing all past and present civilizations and cultures, must join in an action-oriented effort to address the challenges. Ladies and Gentlemen, Before closing, we would like to convey further thanks to all institutions, sponsors, both organizing and scientific committee members, and all participants for making this conference possible and successful. We wish you all have pleasant stay here in Malang city. May you have a very successful conference. Thank you, (More)
