Foreword: This book contains the extended abstracts of the 5th International Congress on Sport Sciences Research and Technology Support (icSPORTS 2017), which is taking place in Funchal, Madeira, Portugal from 30 to 31 October 2017. icSPORTS is co-organized by Universidade da Madeira and had Madeira Interactive Technologies Institute (M-ITI) as a local partner. icSPORTS 2017 is sponsored by the Institute for Systems and Technologies of Information, Control and Communication (INSTICC) and held in cooperation with Società Italiana delle Scienze Motorie e Sportive (SISMES), European College of Sports and Exercise Physicians (E.C.O.S.E.P), European Society of Movement Analysis for Adults and Children (ESMAC), European Association for Sport Management (EASM), International Sports Engineering Association (ISEA), European College of Sport Science (ECSS), International Society of Biomechanics (ISB), the European Federation of Sport Psychology (FEPSAC), European Society of Biomechanics (ESB), Sociedade Portuguesa de Artroscopia e Traumatologia Desportiva (SPAT), Portuguese Society of Physical Education (SPEF), Portuguese Sports Federation for Persons with Disabilities (FPDD), International Association of Computer Science in Sport (IACSS), Portuguese Society of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine (SPMFR), Associação Portuguesa de Fisioterapeutas (APF) and Grupo de Interesse em Fisioterapia do Desporto (GIFD). The Congress Technical Program includes oral presentations and poster presentations, organized in four simultaneous tracks: Computer Systems in Sports, Health and Support Technology, Signal Processing in Human Movement and Sport Performance and Support Technology. All full papers as well as all short papers are included in this book of proceedings. The congress includes also a thematic session on Exergaming as a Strategic Tool to Promote Functional Fitness in Older People, chaired by Élvio Gouveia of the University of Madeira. A major aspect of the program is the inclusion of three plenary keynote lectures held by internationally renowned researchers, namely: Prof. Dr. Gert-Peter Brüggemann (Institute of Biomechanics and Orthopaedics, German Sport University Cologne, Germany), Dr. Andrey Koptyug (Mid Sweden University, Sweden) and Prof. Dr. Andreas Mierau (International University of Health, Exercise and Sports (LU:NEX), Luxembourg).
