Foreword: This volume contains the proceedings of the International Conference on Computer-Human Interaction Research and Applications (CHIRA 2017), held in Funchal, Madeira, Portugal, October 31 – November 2, 2017. CHIRA is sponsored by the Institute for Systems and Technologies of Information, Control and Communication (INSTICC), co-organized by Universidade da Madeira and had Madeira Interactive Technologies Institute (M-ITI) as a local partner. CHIRA is held in cooperation with the ACM Special Interest Group on Management Information Systems (SIGMIS) and the HCI Society of Korea. The purpose of CHIRA is to bring together professionals, academics and students who are interested in the advancement of research and practical applications of human-technology & human-computer interaction. Different aspects of Computer-Human Interaction were covered in five parallel tracks: Human Factors and Information Systems, Pervasive Technologies and Applications, Interactive Devices, Interaction Design and Adaptive and Intelligent Systems. CHIRA’s program includes four talks delivered by internationally distinguished speakers: Larry Constantine (M-ITI, Portugal), Chris Csíkszentmihályi (M-ITI, Portugal), Gerrit van der Veer (Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, VUA, Netherlands) and Max Mulder (TU Delft, Netherlands). The conference program also contains a tutorial on “Physiological Computing with BITalino”. In this first year, CHIRA received 35 paper submissions from 21 countries, of which 20% were accepted as full papers. The high quality of the papers received imposed difficult choices during the review process. To evaluate each submission, a double blind paper review was performed by the Program Committee, whose members are highly qualified independent researchers in the CHIRA topic areas. Based on reviewers’ evaluations and on the presentation quality, a short list of authors will be invited to submit extended revised versions of their papers for a book to be published by Springer containing the best CHIRA 2017 papers All papers presented at this conference will be available at the SCITEPRESS Digital Library shortly after the event. We express our thanks to all participants. First to all the authors, whose quality work is the essence of this conference; secondly to all members of the Program Committee and auxiliary reviewers, who helped us with their expertise and valuable time. We also deeply thank the invited speakers for excellent contributions in sharing their knowledge and vision. We wish you all an inspiring conference and an unforgettable stay in Funchal, Madeira, Portugal. We hope to meet you again next year for the 2nd edition of CHIRA, details of which will soon be available at http://www.chira.scitevents.org/. (More)
