Abstract

This work proposes the use of the well-known Satir communicative patterns in Emotional Belief-Desires- Intentions frameworks (EBDIs) aimed to support the management of Embodied Conversational Agents (ECAs). It shows how to include Satir’s model into the ABC-EBDI framework. The framework is based on the ABC psychological model and considers, not only the behavioural and emotional consequences of events, but also the underlying beliefs. This has made possible the connection with the Satir model that specifies facial and body expressions, voice intonation and linguistic structures related to five universal communication patterns. The consideration of the communication styles makes it possible to link the expressive capabilities of the agents with the BDI cognitive processing and to manage them an integrated way.
