Abstract

We consider a small container storage yard that is located in the outskirts of a marine shipping port. Customers are classified according to the number of storage space they need. The yard has a limited number of storage spots, and serves customers only if there is sufficient space to fulfill their needs. We define the yard’s state space and derive its steady-state probability matrix for Markovian arrivals and service times. We consider the profit function of two services that the yard offers its customers. In the first, storage fees are independent of the storage duration and in the second they are proportional to it. We show when these pricing schemes are equivalent and demonstrate numerically how profits depend on customer arrivals rates and yard size.
