Abstract

Behavior-based interventions can prevent and/or treat many common chronic diseases, but few clinical research studies incorporate behavioral data. Collecting behavioral data on a large-scale is time-consuming and expensive. Fortunately, electronic health records (EHRs) are an incidental source of population-level behavioral data captured in clinical narratives as unstructured, free text. Here, we developed and evaluated three supervised text classification models for stratifying clinical chart notes based on use of yoga, a behavioral determinant of health that is linked to stress-management and the prevention and treatment of chronic disease. We demonstrate that yoga can be extracted from the EHR and classified into meaningful use cases for inclusion in clinical research.
