Abstract

Furfural is an organic compound which has been identified as one of the 30 biorenewable chemicals. Furfural can be produced from agricultural waste or byproduct such as wheat husk, corncobs, rice husk, bagasse, and sawdust. Cocoa pod husk is one of a renewable raw material for furfural manufacturing. Furfural synthesis derived from cocoa pod husk is an effort to create added value from cocoa pod husk.This research has both hydrolysis temperature variation (110, 120, 130 and 140) 0C and hydrolysis time (10, 20, 30, 40 and 50) minutes. The lignin and pentosan content prior to the pretreatment were 14.7% and 38.9% and after the pretreatment became 4.13% and 37.5% respectively. The optimum conditionwas determined at a temperature and hydrolysis time of 1300C and 30 minutes, the furfural yield obtained was 6.728 g / 7.50 g pentosan or 6.728 g / 20 g of cocoa pod husk and 82.2% of furfural yield. This proven that the husk of the cocoa has the high potential for it is to be converted into furfural.
