The Influence of using Line Today and the Information Needs on Student Interest in Reading the News

Abstract

The ease of getting information or news via the internet takes down student interest on the printed media such as newspapers, magazines, and others. In 2017, the number of Internet users reached 3.8 billion in the world or it was 51 percent of the entire population of the earth. Line Today is one of the features at Line application. Students can read the news information easily online via Line Today. In the first quarter of 2017, Line managed to pocket 171 million users worldwide. The objective of the study is to determine the influence of Line Today and the information needs to read the news on student interest. It is a quantitative study with multiple linear regression method. The population of this study are 110 students of Educational Administration on the fifth semester at Universitas Negeri Semarang. It uses purposive sampling and it gets 86 students as the samples calculated by solvin formula. This research results show that 1) there is a partial influence of Line Today on student interest in reading the news for 8 percent, 2) there is a partial influence of the information needs on student interest in reading the news for 33 percent, 3) Simultaneously, there is an influence of using Line Today and student the information needs in reading the news for 65.9 percent. It can be concluded that there is a significant influence of the variables Line Today (X1) and the information needs (X2) on student interest in reading the news (Y).
