Linguistic Diversity as Resource: English Language Learners in a University Writing Center

Abstract

In US colleges and universities, a growing number of English language learners (ELL) are using university writing centers for assistance. However, despite the increase in linguistic diversity among students, writing centers have been slow to respond to the needs of ELL students, approaching their language differences as problems to fix rather than resources for learning. Through an institutional case study, this paper describes how a writing center in a mid-sized, public university in the US has increased its support for ELL students and linguistic diversity through changes in staffing, staff education, and outreach.
