Hazardous Waste Identification and Management at Fire Assay Laboratory Based on Indonesian Government Regulation

Abstract

In metallurgy analysis, hazardous and toxic materials are used and it will result in residues which cannot be used anymore and become exiles in a form of hazardous waste (HW) that have to be managed, so that it will not pollute and endanger the environment and health. The method used to determine the characteristics referred to Indonesia Government Regulation (IGR) PP No. 101/2014. This research aimed to identify the types of HW generations resulted, as well as to evaluate its management method. Meanwhile, the implementation of monitoring and evaluation of HW management was conducted based on IGR on Hazardous Wastes Management (HWM). Research results showed HW management generally had rating scale 2 which meant quite appropriate. HW code in IGR was more specific where the code for HW especially fire assay waste had been stated. Conclusions that could be given were improvements on the consistency of HW type code writing in each container of HW storage. This was influenced by officers’ habit that still referred to the regulation prior to IGR. Thus, re-inspection ought to be done to prevent mistakes in the stockpiling process at the HW stockpiling location.
