Abstract

Population increase in Surabaya City resulted in the increase of the need for clean water, 80% of residual usage has the potential to become grey water. Grey water has been channeled to drainage channel without prior processing. From the existing problems, a research on grey water treatment using anaerobic biofilter technology with the pumice stone media wasthen conducted. The aim of this research was to analyze the effect of reactor volume of the anaerobic biofilter to reduce pollutant load on grey water. The parameters tested were Biological Oxygen Deman (BOD) and Chemical Oxygen Deman (COD) parameters. The research consisted of 3 laboratory-scale reactors of varying volume. Reactor 1 (R1) has a volume of 0.06 m3, reactor 2 (R2) has a volume of 0.045 m3, and reactor 3 (R3) has a volume of 0.03 m3. The flow system was carried out continuously with a flow rate of 0.02 m3/day. The seeding and acclimation process lasted for 6 days to reach steady state conditions. The data obtained was then analyzed and expressed in percent. The results showed that R1 reactor with volume 0.06 m3 had the efficiency level of BOD5 pollutant load removal of 95% and COD of 97%.
