Abstract

Abstract : Recovery is a way to reduce the blood lactic acid level after exercise. There are several kinds of passive recovery, including warm water immersion and contrast water immersion. However, these recovery forms are little understood. This study aimed to identify the different effects of passive recovery at room temperature, in warm water immersion, and in contrast water immersion on blood lactic acid levels after submaximal physical activity. The research design was a randomized pretest–posttest control group design. This research used 24 subjects who were members of UNESA Basketball UKM, who were 18–22 years old, and whose BMI was 18,5–24,9. The research was conducted at Atlas Sports Club Surabaya over two days in September 2017. The subjects were given three different treatments: K1 passive recovery at room temperature (24–26°C), K2 passive recovery with warm water immersion (33–35°C) and K3 passive recovery with contrast water immersion (8–10°C and 40–42°C). The three groups undertook submaximal physical activity: 80% HR max pedaling ergo cycle for five minutes. Five minutes later, the level of blood lactic acid was measured (pretest). The subjects continued with the three kinds of recovery for nine more minutes. Soon after recovery, the level of blood lactic acid was measured again (posttest). The results showed the highest decrease in blood lactic acid levels in the recovery group using contrast water immersion (p = 0.00). Passive recovery in contrast water immersion proved to be faster in reducing blood lactic acid levels compared with passive recovery in warm water immersion and passive recovery at room temperature.
