Abstract

Abstract: Evidence showed that physical exercise can have a negative impact on the reproductive system and fertility. The effects on women in many kind of forms have been thoroughly researched (e.g. irregular menstrual cycles, amenorrhea). In contrast, there is very limited information on male subjects. The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of physical exercise on fertility in male rats. This experimental study used the post-test only control group design and was carried out in the Faculty of Medicine, Airlangga University, in 2015. Twenty-eight healthy male Wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus) were randomized to one of the following groups: control, low (load 3% of body mass), moderate (load 4% of body mass), and high (load 5% of body mass) intensity swimming exercise. Rats were swim-exercised once a day, three times a week, for four weeks. After sacrifice, we collected the epididymis to take a semen analysis test. Results showedn that there were no significant differences sperm count, motility and morphology have no significant differences between groups (p>0.005). This study concluded that low, moderate, and high intensity swimming exercise (loads equal to 3–-5% body mass) for four weeks have no negative effects on sperm function in male rats.
