Abstract

Abstract:Homosisteine is now known as a risk factor that can cause atherosclerosis. Homosisteine is a non-protein sulfhydryl amino acid that has a metabolic pathway in the path of remethylation and transulfuration of methionine biosynthesis. Folic acid and cyanocobalamin are enzyme cofactors in the process of metabolism of the biosynthesis. Low intensity weight training and folic acid supplementation and cyanocobalamin can be used to decrease plasma homocysteine levels. However, the effectiveness of weight training with supplementation has never been examined. This study aims to prove a decrease in plasma homocysteine levels by providing low intensity weight training, folic acid supplementation and cyanocobalamin. This research method used experimental laboratory pre and posttest. Fourteen men (n = 14) aged 25-30 years having smoking habits were divided into two experimental groups, each group consisting of seven people. The first group was given low intensity weight training and supplementation of folic acid and cyanocobalamin (n = 7), the second group was given low intensity weight training without supplementation (n = 7). Weight training was done for 45-55 minutes. There was a decrease in plasma homocysteine levels in the first group with low intensity weight training, folic acid supplementation and cyanocobalamin with an average value of 11.95μmol/L to 9.65μmol/L. However, there was an increase in the group with low intensity weight training without supplementation with a mean value of 18.98μmol/L to 20.40μmol/L.The conclusion is that there is a decrease after supplementation of folic acid and cyanocobalamin as well as low intensity load training on homocysteine levels. However, there was an increase after low intensity load training without folic acid supplementation and cyanocobalamin on homocysteine levels with significance value (p <0.05).
